TrayZen vs TrayMinder vs Other Aligner Apps: An Honest Comparison

If you’re mid-treatment with Invisalign, or you’ve moved on to a retainer, you already know how it goes. Wear them 20-22 hours a day or your teeth slowly drift back. Simple enough in theory. In practice you’re guessing most of the time, and you realize at 11pm that they’ve been sitting on the kitchen counter since lunch.

So you look for an app. There are a few in the App Store and honestly picking one is more confusing than it should be, so here’s my honest take on the main options.

What’s actually out there

TrayZen

The idea behind TrayZen is pretty simple: tap when you take them out, tap when you put them back in, and the app figures out the rest. No account to create, no server syncing, nothing like that. You open it, you tap, you’re done.

The part I think actually sets it apart is the notifications. Most apps will just ping you after some fixed delay (“hey it’s been 30 minutes”). TrayZen looks at how much you’ve worn them so far today and sends you a warning while you can still do something about it. Like if you’ve been out since morning and you’re running out of day to hit your goal, it’ll tell you before it’s actually too late, not after. That sounds obvious but most apps don’t do this.

It’s free for the core timer. Premium gets you widgets, Siri shortcuts and the Apple Watch app.

Downsides are real though: it’s iOS only, there’s no web version, and you can’t share data with your orthodontist.

TrayMinder

TrayMinder’s been around the longest and has the most features. Treatment progress charts, compliance history, a more detailed dashboard. If you want that level of detail it has it.

The problem is the business model. On the free tier there are ads, which feels a bit clunky on an app you’re tapping into multiple times a day. And the premium version costs a recurring subscription, which for something this simple feels like more than it should be. To be honest I think some of those features should just be included.

If you’re on Android or need something that works across platforms it’s probably your best bet. If you just want something clean and fast without ads, you’ll find it a bit much.

Basic reminder apps (Retainer Reminder, etc.)

There’s a whole category of apps that basically just set an alarm for you. They don’t track anything, there’s no goal ring, no history. You tell it to remind you every X hours and it does.

They work fine for what they are. But if you’ve ever wondered “did I actually hit 22 hours today” they can’t tell you that, because they’re not tracking anything. Worth knowing before you download one expecting more.

So which one?

If you’re on iPhone and you mostly want something that stays out of your way but actually tells you when you’re about to miss your goal, TrayZen is probably it. If you need Android or you really want the detailed compliance graphs, go with TrayMinder. And if all you want is a nudge every couple of hours, any of the basic reminder apps will do.

Honestly the one you’ll stick with is the one you actually bother opening. So pick something simple and see if it sticks.
